CALCULATION OF ELASTIC PROPERTIES OF GRP LAMINATES USED IN SHIP CONSTRUCTION
A review is made of methods currently available for calculating the elastic properties of fibre-reinforced composites. Details are given of a computer program, based on the methods discussed, which can be used to calculate elastic constants governing the membrane and flexural behaviour of laminates formed by any number of unidirectional plies having arbitrary thickness, orientation and fibre/matrix properties. Provision is made for treatment of cloth laminates. Calculations have been carried out for some ship-type GRP laminates and results are presented illustrating the influence on laminate performance of such variables as glass content, fibre and resin moduli, fibre orientation and fibre contiguity.
