Good Management Keeps Tunnel Fit-Out on Time

This article describes the innovative techniques that are being used to speed up the installation of overhead conductor rails, track, and signaling devices in Switzerland’s Zentralbahn (ZB) Engelberg tunnel. The tunnel is projected to open in December 2010. The tunnel is just over 4 kilometers, running between Grafenort and Engelberg, and replaces the steepest section of ZB’s meter-gauge Luzerne-Stans-Engelberg line. The authors report the many delays and problems encountered by this project and how each was addressed to culminate in this final success. Topics include the staged installation, companies involved in the fitting-out project, and the stages used for tracklaying. Final tasks for summer of 2010 include installation of the radio communication cable, final adjustments to the contact wire, and laying the connection to the existing line, followed by installation of the signaling and telecommunications.
