Prior to the publication in this journal, early in 1979, of a comprehensive article on bridge bearings and expansion joints by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory, a series of notes is presented by some makers of bridge bearings and joints providing observations or details of their particular products. PSC Equipment Ltd provide a general appraisal of bridge bearings, in particular elastometric and mechanical types; CCL Systems Ltd decribe the CIPEC range of heavy duty expansion joints; Demag Industrial Equipment Ltd present data on the four types of demag multi-plate bridge deck expansion joints suitable for employment in both steel and massive concrete bridges; BTR Silvertown Ltd discuss developments in both rubber and laminated bearings; Industrial Flooring Services Ltd describe a cementitious mono-joint nosing system developed from a five year testing programme; Andre Rubber Co Ltd describe their range of rubber-metal sandwich elastometric bearings which can carry loads of up to 1500 t; Thormack Group describe thorma-joint, a flexible bridge deck jointing system which employs a flexible compound BJ200; Worthyseal Ltd describe watertight expansion joints and nosings of the Rheinstahl type; Losinger Systems describe Maurer expansion joints in which a completely watertight closure of the gap is formed by a neoprene sealing element which by its folding action absorbs the total movement of the joint; Glacier Metal Co Ltd describe structural bearings and expansion joints, and a photograph illustrates a glacier spherically seated cygnus roller bearing for the new Tyne metro bridge. /TRRL/
