After describing the necessity of noise barriers for the sake of the health of those living close to busy roads, reference is made to the legal requirements. The construction and technical requirements listed in the research associations publication "preliminary code of practice for highway noise protection" are discussed. Because noise protection structures should have a short construction time, favourable erection costs, longevity and low maintenance charges, concrete structures are recommended. Normal, lightweight and asbestos concrete barriers developed in Germany are illustrated. For the various construction forms the elements have been so developed that troughs available for the planting of climbing plants may be introduced on one or both sides. mesh can be weighted. /Author/TRRL/ to be fully absorptive or reflective. /TRRL/
