VEHICLE DESIGN: GENERAL DESIGN FEATURES

The author examines briefly the historical environment from which electrics grew and its apparent inhibiting influence on design and development. The paper discusses how performance can be improved marginally by coupling the power source to varying designs of driving motors, drivers and controllers, whilst gains can also be achieved by recovery of deceleration power. In the final analysis, performance will always be a function of the ability of the charger to refuel without undue loss of vehicle availability and battery deterioration. Finally, the advantages of complex electronics and accessories are weighed against basic simplicity, coupled with acknowledgement of the excellent work being undertaken in private experimentation. /TRRL/
