Residual schists are waste resulting from mining works and these make up large heaps which change the aspect of the landscape. Thought was given to putting such a large quantity of material to use, and this led to a series of studies of the possible uses of schists in construction. The studies and experiments carried out in mines in the north of France have demonstrated that it is possible, under certain conditions, to use some of the schists, to obtain lightweight aggregates which can be utilized for the production of concrete and bricks, and for highway construction. In this article, the author studies the procedures and the systems for obtaining such aggregates together with the fields of the latter.
