SIMAURIF: SIMulation of the interAction between land Use and transportation in the Region Ile-de-France (Paris region)

SIMAURIF is an integrated land-use - transportation model for Paris region that has been developed for the last three years. It is based on two existing models: OPUS/UrbanSim, a land use model, and Davisum-METROPOLIS which is the transportation model. The region is cut into 50 000 grid cells of 500 meters each side. This grid allows taking into account the notion of proximity and the spatial dynamics at the local level. The integrated tool runs on disaggregated data (4.5 million households and 5 million jobs). The time step for dynamic simulation is equal to one year for UrbanSim and three years for the transportation model. An interface prototype has been developed which allows input and output data to be exchanged in an automatic feedback process. This project has required a huge amount of data for input as well as for calibration. The location choices of households and jobs are estimated by discrete choice models, as well as the probability of transition of cells land use from the vacant type to urban types, whereas the real estate price model is a hedonic regression model. Each module of UrbanSim had to be adapted to the specific case of Paris region. The four steps of the traffic model were also calibrated. The integrated model was calibrated on the period 1990-1999 and simulations were run for 1999 to 2026. SIMAURIF has been used to evaluate a railway project: the "North Tangential" that will be operating in 2016. The study area is located in the north of Paris and comprises 853 square cells. The predicted spatial distribution of households and jobs in 2026 was studied. The question was to know if SIMAURIF is able to measure the indirect benefits of such an infrastructure, for example the number of households and jobs attracted to this area by the North Tangential and their localization around the stations. The simulation was run for two scenarios. Interesting results and maps are presented which show that SIMAURIF can be reliable at the expense of some improvements.
