INSTRUMENTATION TECHNIQUES IN ROCK MECHANICS

TECNICAS DE INSTRUMENTACION EN LA MECANICA DE ROCAS

An attempt has been made to review in a rapid and general way the present problems connected with auscultation in the field of rock mechanics, including by this the whole process from planning the measurements to be taken to interpreting the results. The author defines a series of points to be taken into account if correct ascultation is to be achieved, points referring to the measurements to be taken, the apparatus to use and the analysis procedures to apply. After setting up a programme of action concerning the right design and mounting of the equipment, based on the instrument design, installation plan, operating instructions of the instruments concerned and characteristics of the measurements required, the article goes on to describe the different methods used in rock mechanics for calculating internal stresses, determining induced stresses and pore water pressures, measuring displacements, strains and strength of rock masses, etc. Finally, the article describes how the instrumentation chosen can be applied to underground excavations and slope construction. /TRRL/
