GYRATORY TEST MACHINE. APPLICATION TO THE STUDY OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

A gyratory machine is described which is used for the compaction of soils and bituminous materials in the laboratory. It facilitates the observation of excess plasticity phenomena occurring when the voids of the mineral skeleton are too full due to too high compaction or excess material. The characteristics of tension - deformation obtained by pressure and crushing have a great resemblance to those occurring in reality. The tests provide the following parameters: density, percentages of voids in the mixture and aggregates, cohesion and friction. It may be employed to study the development of the resistance to wear and deterioration of the aggregates for different levels of loading and as a function of loading time. It is useful in projects involving bituminous mixes (determination of particle size distribution and optimum bitumen content) and soils (optimum water content and density). /TRRL/
