EXPANDING AN EXISTING AIRPORT

The ways are examined in which an airport expansion planner can provide capacity quickly, economically and with the least upheaval to passengers and staff. Three expansion projects (London/Heathrow, Leonardo da Vinci/Rome, and Paris/Roissy) are briefly examined. It is noted that planners must take into account the human environment, technical innovations in air transport, security, and the impact of the lower fare structures on the the terminal and on airline handling operations. New ideas on the topic of airport expansion are briefly outlined.
