IS THERE A FUTURE FOR HELICOPTER AIRLINES?

The article expresses the view of a bright future for helicopter airlines, and recent technological advances which support this view are noted. British Airways Helicopters will soon introduce a civil version of the Boeing Vertol Chinook on its offshore oil support routes, which will have a 60 seat capacity. The Sikorsky S-76 Spirit is another new-technology helicopter under consideration in a number of quarters. Sikorsky's civil version of the UH-60 Black-Hawk called the S-70 would carry from 22 to 35 passengers. The Aerospatiale's 20-seat stretched Super Puma is another new design. It is noted that the helicopter's special capability to meet the needs of time-conscious passengers is the only justification for the use of helicopters in airline service.
