China is opening its borders and the number of tourists is growing. China recognizes 3 types of visitors: overseas Chinese, Westerners including Japanese, and East Europeans. The number of actual and projected arrivals in these categories are tabulated. Two types of tourist organizations are distinguished by the Chinese: friendship, and commercial. Comments are made in this article on the segregation of foreigners, as well as on the centralized planning for tourism. Tibet apart, virtually the entire country is open to tourists, and 111 Centers have been opened. New train services have also been inaugurated and new aircraft have been purchased. Comments are also made regarding tourist sites, hotels, and shopping.
