BATTERY DEVELOPMENTS

This paper presents a brief review of the history of batteries from Volta to Plante and Faure. Following the development of lead acid and alkaline batteries, the former divide into three main streams - automotive starting, lighting and ignition, stationary and motive power batteries. The various elements of battery design, the manner and reason for the incorporation of various improvements are discussed briefly. Charging and discharge and the influence of various techniques on battery performance are also discussed. /Author/TRRL/
