State-of-the-art regarding poroelastic road surfaces [Deliverable D8.1 - WP 8 Information Management]

The concept of using a poroelastic material as a pavement material was invented and patented the first time in Sweden more than 30 years ago. However, intensive research did not start until in the mid-1990's. In road applications this pavement is commonly known as poroelastic road surface (PERS). PERS research and development so far has been made essentially in Japan and Sweden, but some recent work has also been made in Slovenia and the Netherlands. Some work was also made in Norway about 20 years ago. The PERSUADE project aims at advancing research and development of PERS to a level at which it can be applied on different types of roads (such as highways and local streets) as a noise-reducing pavement capable of providing better cost-benefit options than noise barriers, and useful and effective in many situations when noise barriers would not be effective at all. The objective of this State-of-the-Art report is to provide as much information as possible about the past experiences along with the current ongoing work which is relevant to the PERSUADE project. The information will not only cover the previous Swedish and Japanese work, but also the outcome of the relevant parts of the recent SILVIA, SILENCE, and Qcity Projects will be summarized. http://persuade.fehrl.org/?m=3&mode=download&id_file=9210
