CONTAINER SHIP/SHORE SPREADER BEAMS--GAINING RESPECTABILITY

Being at the interface between crane and box, the ship/shore spreader beam is subject to the formidable stresses imposed by its role as a means of transfer between the two. Consequently, a fairly complex but sturdy piece of equipment is required, which must also satisfy the various commercial demands made of machinery in a high throughput industry. An earlier report investigated the implications to design of such requirements, and the inherent problems being experienced by users and manufacturers. This article takes another look at the situation and examines new developments that have emerged during the interim period.
