RO-RO LASHING SYSTEMS-ADEQUATE TECHNOLOGY BUT A NEED TO EDUCATE OPERATORS

Ro-ro involves a series of costly investments to facilitate speed in the handling and movement of cargo, combining movement by road, rail and sea. Whatever the mode of transport, the cargo and its carrying medium are subjected to a variety of forces, each capable of destruction unless adequate precautions are taken to restrain them using the correct lashing. Unfortunately, while technical progress in ro-ro transportation has been rapid, progress in lashing techniques, speed and materials has been slow. Lashing equipment has, in the past, been low down on the list of cost priorities by ro-ro operators but there are now signs that the cheapest is not always the best in terms of port time and effectiveness. To reduce the cost of his handling time, the ro-ro operator must specify more elaborate systems.
