EXPERIMENTAL CARGO AIRLINER PROPOSED TO FURTHER LH2 FUEL-TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT

Using L-1011 Tristars, a route involving four widely separated cities is suggested to develop both production and service facilities for the experimental airliner, as well as the necessary experience with its alternative fuel. The liquid hydrogen LH2-fueled, wide-body aircraft will carry commercial cargo on a regularly scheduled basis between the United States, Western Europe and the Middle East. The major objectives of this program are stated, and the overall dimensions and characteristics of the LH2 freighter are illustrated. The proposed schedule for the experimental airline program is also noted. A rough estimate of the order of magnitude estimate of cost involved in development and startup of this enterprise is also presented.
