DEVELOPMENT OF THE ITALIAN AIRPORT NETWORK IN RELATION TO THE RAILROAD SYSTEM

LO SVILUPPO DELLA RETE AEROPORTUALE ITALIANA IN RELAZIONE AL SISTEMA FERROVIARIO

The passenger traffic in Italy for distances between 200 and 1000 km is reviewed from the point of view of optimal development of the air and railroad transportation systems. An analysis of the areas of airport and railroad influence is carried out and illustrated with many diagrams. It is concluded that the Italian air transport must provide connections between the North and the South, and with islands, and at medium distances where the traffic is not heavy. The airport network of Italy is overabundant and has to be redimensioned in relation to the development of rapid railroad networks. New railroad routes must start from airports.
