Specifying Design for Environment to Build Sustainability in Rail Vehicle Projects: An Overview

Bombardier Transportation has been developing the expertise of design for environment - also known as eco-design - since 1992. Initially concentrated in Northern Europe, eco-design requirements have since extended beyond Europe to the Americas, Oceania and Asia. Controlling environmental impacts is a global challenge that requires stakeholder cooperation. While solitary actors can only minimize environmental impacts within their sphere of influence, the cooperation of stakeholders in eco-design can transform their way of operating, resulting in a control of environmental impacts. Eco-design equips actors and structures their cooperation by measuring performance, studying the potential of new approaches and guiding collaboration toward defining environmental standards. Tools are evolving, and rail transportation eco-design pioneers have already implemented methods that are benchmarks today. Sustainable environmental performances are progressing toward control, particularly in Europe, which in a way sets the standard for countries (and companies) that are only beginning the process.
