Roads and the environment - update (2007-2009)

This issue of Current Topics includes over 65 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on the environmental considerations applied to the planning of new road schemes and the maintenance and upgrading of existing schemes. The focus is on sustainability, environmental impact assessment, environmentally acceptable design standards, and measures that can be taken to mitigate environmental difficulties caused by roads. Specific topics include reduction of road surface noise, the use of recycled materials for road construction, the control of traffic nuisance (especially noise), and environment protection and nature conservation. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 2007 and 2009. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.
