On heavy-duty trucks the cooling system plays an important role in engine performance, service life, and fuel efficiency. The cooling system is composed of radiator, hoses, water passages in the engine block, water pump, fan, and the coolant itself. If radiator shutters are used, they too are considered part of the system. Perhaps one of the better innovations in cooling systems in recent years has been the advent of temperature-controlled fans to reduce noise, reduce fuel consumption, or both. A fact that is not so generally recognized is the ability of clutch-controlled fans to prevent overcooling which has a serious effect upon engine service life as well as on performance.
