Integrating Information on Ridesharing Opportunities

This brief article emphasizes the importance of linking rideshare opportunities with transit, traffic, private shuttle information, and intercity travel options in order to increase participation in ridesharing programs. Research shows that over half of the people who currently use ridesharing also use other transportation modes. The provision of multi-modal information can improve decision making for travelers. The article describes some examples of this type of information provision, including Goose Networks (Seattle, Washington), and the Opti-Trans demonstration project in Europe. A final section calls for the development of common formats for recording transit data.
