New BRT Projects Gather Momentum Across the U.S.

Metro’s annual Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) survey includes 43 projects, all in the U.S. except for one in Canada. For each project, the magazine lists the following information: location, project agency, capital cost, year of start, number of BRT vehicles, running way features, station characteristics, vehicle styles, fare collection characteristics, propulsion, and intelligent transportation system use. The author notes that 64 percent of vehicles included in the survey run on clean diesel, while 60 percent are hybrid-electrics. A distant third, 28 percent, use compressed natural gas. Transit agencies plan to purchase some 102 vehicles in 2010, slightly fewer than in 2009. The West Coast, which has a total of 16 projects expected to begin operation in the next seven years, is the region producing the highest number of new BRT systems.
