Future Mobility in Alabama: Meeting the State’s Need for Safe and Efficient Mobility

This report investigates current bridge and highway conditions, level of traffic safety, amount of traffic congestion and the financial needs of major bridges, highways and public transit in Alabama. It finds that highway reconstruction, maintenance and rehabilitation needs are growing, and the the current funding is not sufficient for those needs. Twenty-four percent of bridges in Alabama are structurally deficient. Levels of traffic congestion are increasing. Fatalities from traffic accidents in rural areas occur significantly more often than traffic accident fatalities in other areas of Alabama. It is clear that more federal funding is needed in order to meet Alabama's need for efficient and safe mobility.
