Beware the Cost of Noise

The views of Matthias Pippert, an environmental economics and transportation specialist with Allianz pro Schiene, a German rail lobbying group, are presented in regard to railroad noise emissions. Pippert believes that future rail operations will feel a major economic impact from such emissions due to growing political and social awareness. While the focus to date has been on noise produced by freight rail, that produced by passenger rail also is coming under scrutiny. Funding, charges, and rolling stock are discussed. Environmental efforts by countries such as Austria, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Switzerland are examined. Pippert argues that research and development need to continue so that technologies can be found to help meet evolving environmental policies without compromising efficiency of rail operations.
