Sweden Sets a Course for a Decade of Change

The views of Minoo Akhtarzand, Swedish track authority Banverket's director general, are presented in regard to the centrality of rail to Sweden's bold vision for integrated transportation. In the coming decade, there will be huge changes in Sweden's railroad industry due to the advancement of high speed rail in Sweden's political agenda, liberalization of Swedish passenger services, and a new structure for the Swedish transportation administration. Funding high speed is an important question in further developing the Swedish system, as is dealing with a convoluted planning process. The need to integrate European Rail Traffic Management System and other issues, such as reorganizing Sweden's transportation management system, are discussed.
