An Ambitious Expansion Plan: The Pathway to the Future

The metropolitan area of Sao Paulo, Brazil, has a goal of doubling the market share of the public transportation sector by the year 2025. This article discusses this ambitious expansion plan. Plans include expanding the network's metro lines from 61 km to 240 km and adding a new signaling system that will significantly increase the system's operational speed. In addition, more than 100 trains are being acquired, dozens of new stations are being built, and new methods of transportation such as light rail are being introduced. A new fare collection system is also being added. The first phase of the project will be concluded in 2010, with the remainder finished by 2014.
