Using Natural Gas Transmission Pipeline Costs to Estimate Hydrogen Pipeline Costs

Development of a hydrogen infrastructure is the subject of increasing interest. Many researchers are attempting to estimate the cost of such an infrastructure, but while pipeline delivery of hydrogen is being considered, the expected costs are not well understood. This paper analyzes construction costs of natural gas, oil, and petroleum product transmission pipelines, in order to ascertain costs of potential hydrogen pipelines. The author notes that pipeline planners hesitate to give general estimates for pipeline construction cost because it is dependent to a large extent on location.
