Essential Elements of Sustainable Design

This article is excerpted from a new American Planning Association book, Grid/Street/Place. Based on information compiled from more than 100 notable urban districts, the article presents eight essential elements of sustainable urbanism. These elements are: urbanism is a brand; historic conservation; legibility and compactness; targeted and complementary partnerships; diversity of uses; smart infrastructure; areas for learning and contemplation; and venues for events and entertainment. The author concludes that a more systemic approach is needed to obtain a more sustainable urbanism.
