Developments in the field of vehicle dynamics simulation packages are reviewed. Mechanical Simulation Corporation's CarSim 80 enables the use of sensors on cars to provide data from the simulated environment to be put into driver assistance control algorithms. A requirement for the integration of different areas is discussed in particular the increasing use of hybridisation. ITI is focusing on integrating the steering system, braking system, driveline and gearshift into the vehicle dynamic simulation. rFactor Pro offer video-game-quality visuals to run with a wide variety of full-vehicle models. The disadvantages of using Ccode as a modelling language and the benefits of moving to Modelica are discussed. Also considered are Cruden's ePHYSE plug-in which allows customers to input their own vehicle dynamics codes in a shorter time, improvements to M D Adams including faster run times, collaborations on common development platforms and a dedicated dynamics tool from Altair Engineering to be used with MotionView.
