Traffic Officers learn valuable lessons in virtual world

The use of the computer game V-SIM to train Highways Agency traffic officers is briefly outlined. Eight players can take part in a 45 minute session whilst being watched by a moderator. Scenarios are played out and the game paused at strategic points to assess the officers' progress in dealing with the incident. The aim is to test and teach at the same time, analysing decision-making capabilities, use of resources and the application of procedures such as traffic management. The main advantage of the system is its flexibility, requiring only laptops and broadband connections. Training can be arranged to fit around the rotas of traffic officers. For senior management training there is a separate V-SIM immersion exercise with more complex scenarios played out in a classroom over a full day.
