Austroads sprayer calibration project

In 2000 an Austroads Working group developed the first national calibration and test methods to ensure mechanical bitumen sprayers met the Austroads specification, and adopted by all State Road Authorities and Industry. A number of significant improvements and innovations in sprayer technology have been introduced since then, and the current specification and test methods require updating to reflect these. AUSTROADS approved a project to undertake this work and a specialist Working Group was set up for this project. Following our initial investigation into types of sprayers and calibration requirements we have divided the project into three stages to address: updating the existing specification and develop it into a ‘performance based’ specification for bitumen sprayers, develop appropriate test methods for calibration of various types of sprayers to check they with the new specification, check the output and spraying pattern of existing Copley Nozzles for various binders including polymer modified binders with a view to developing a computer based simulation of patterns and transverse distribution. This paper presents an overview of the new performance based specification, and proposed testing of sprayer nozzle performance for various binders.
