Queensland developments in stone mastic asphalt
Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) has proven itself internationally as a surfacing of choice in many countries. Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) has successfully used SMA for over a decade. However, in recent years there have been issues relating to the permeability/durability of SMA. The issues were significant enough to warrant the withdrawal of DTMR's SMA specification until the durability issues could be addressed. With the assistance of national and international experts, and the benefit of various Queensland trials, a new supplementary SMA specification has been developed. The following paper details the development and trialling of this new supplementary specification. (a) For the covering record of the conference, please refer to ITRD no. E218387.
