The environmental footprint of bitumen

Following the introduction of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act in 2008 it is now mandatory for Australian businesses to report CO2 emissions. Any facility or combined facilities under single company ownership emitting greater than 25 kilotonnes of CO2 per annum must report on greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. This legislation introduces a new requirement for large corporations involved in the highway industry and brings focus to the environmental impact of road construction and maintenance activities. This paper addresses the contribution of bitumen to the environmental footprint of the asphalt and sealing industries in Australia and what role can be played by the Industry in terms of reducing carbon pollution.
