Equipment Standards and Testing Development Research for the FDOT Traffic Engineering Research Lab

Providing needed technical and applications engineering support to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) with the development of standards, testing and evaluation capabilities, and training for the traffic control and ITS devices and related devices. Because many new and innovative transportation devices are being developed by industry, the FDOT recognized the need for a modern research and testing facility to review and evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of these new technologies for use on the state's roadway system. To answer this need, the joint FDOT/Florida State University (FSU) research partnership was brought to life in October 1996 as funding of a research project with FSU was approved for three years. The operation of the FDOT Traffic Engineering Research Laboratory (TERL), located on Springhill Road in Tallahassee began operation in May 1997. With the establishment of the research and testing lab, the FDOT has been able to play a leading role in the development, testing and evaluation of many state-of-the-art traffic control and intelligent transportation system ITS systems and equipment.
