EXPERIENCES WITH WIRE CABLES ON THE CENTRAL RESERVES OF MOTORWAYS /IN GERMAN/

CABLE SAFETY FENCES DEVELOPED IN BRITAIN WERE INSTALLED ON THE CENTRAL RESERVE OF THE BERNE-ZURICH NATIONAL ROAD N1 FOLLOWING COLLISION TESTS ON THE BARRIER IN SWITZERLAND. THE BARRIERS PROVED EFFICIENT AFTER MORE THAN ONE YEAR'S USE. AN ANALYSIS OF 100 ACCIDENTS SHOWS THAT THE SOFT IMPACT CAN PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY, AND THE VEHICLE DOES NOT RICOCHET BACK ONTO THE CARRIAGEWAY IF THE TENSION OF THE CABLES IS CORRECTLY ADJUSTED. COSTS OF REPAIRS TO THE CABLE AND THE VEHICLE ARE MODERATE. /VSS/FG/RRL/
