Some Improvement on Fictitious Beam Method for Main Cable of Suspension Bridge

In this paper, the fictitious beam method (FBM) for resolving the main cable of suspension bridge is improved. First, the suitability of the FBM on the entire cable under the action of vertical load is proven, so that in idealized model the cable is no longer divided by suspenders. Second, in order to relate any 2 continuous load states of the cable, the compatibility equation based on the FBM is derived. Third, by the analogy of multi-point supported continuous beam, the equation for live load deflection is deduced. The establishment of the above nonlinear equation is not only suited for the determination of main cable profile, but is also suited for the calculation of live load deflection of suspension bridge. Comparison of the calculation examples demonstrated the accuracy and the applicability of the improved FBM.
