HIGHWAY SHOULDER PRACTICE IN CANADA

A SURVEY WAS MADE OF SHOULDER DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE PRACTICES OF THE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS OF THE 10 PROVINCES AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY SUGGEST THE NEED FOR: (1) ACCEPTED CRITERIA FOR THE GEOMETRY OF SHOULDERS, (2) ACCEPTED CRITERIA FOR THE STRUCTURAL STRENGTH OF SHOULDERS, (3) ACCEPTED CRITERIA FOR THE SELECTION OF THE APPROPRIATE SURFACE MATERIAL ON SHOULDERS, (4) ACTUAL COSTS OF CONSTRUCTING SHOULDERS, (5) ACTUAL COSTS OF MAINTAINING SHOULDERS, AND (6) THE AFFECT OF SHOULDER MAINTENANCE PRACTICES ON THE LIFE OF BOTH THE SHOULDER AND MAIN ROADWAY. /CGRA/
