CRITICAL PAVEMENT ANALYSIS

COLOR-INFRARED AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS PROVIDE A MEDIUM FOR EVALUATION OF EXISTING AIRPORT PAVEMENTS WITH LITTLE INTERFERENCE TO AIR TRAFFIC. PHOTOGRAPHS OF BOTH SURFACE-WET AND SURFACE-DRY RUNWAYS ILLUSTRATE THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF PAVEMENT DEFORMATIONS. JOINTS OR CRACKS TRANSMITTING SURFACE WATER TO THE PAVEMENT SUBBASE ARE EASILY DISTINGUISHED ON THE ABOVE PHOTOGRAPHY. VISIBLE ACCUMULATIONS OF EXHAUST AND RUBBER RESIDUES ILLUSTRATE THE EXTENT OF AIRCRAFT ACTIVITIES. RUNWAY WEAR CHARACTERISTICS, LOSS OF DESIGN SLOPE AND GRADE ARE VISIBLY REFLECTED IN SURFACE DEFORMATION PATTERNS. AIRPHOTO INTERPRETATION TECHNIQUES CORRELATE PAVEMENT DEFORMATIONS WITH TRAFFIC USE AND DETRIMENTAL SUBGRADE CONDITIONS. THESE INTERPRETATIONS PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR RUNWAY CONSTRUCTION PLANNING AND MAINTENANCE PROGRAMS. /AUTHOR/
