CIVIL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS OF AIRBORNE REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGY

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGY HAVE PRODUCED INSTRUMENTS CAPABLE OF SENSING FAR BEYOND THE VISUAL AND PHOTOGRAPHIC RANGE OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM AND INTO THE THERMAL INFRARED AND RADAR AND MICROWAVE REGIONS. SYSTEMS SUCH AS SIDE-LOOKING AIRBORNE RADAR CAN MAP TERRAIN DAY OR NIGHT, ALMOST WITHOUT REGARD FOR WEATHER CONDITIONS. MANY NEW USES FOR EXISTING SYSTEMS ARE EMERGING, AND MORE EXOTIC SYSTEMS THAN THOSE CURRENTLY IN USE ARE UNDER DEVELOPMENT. AN OVERALL VIEW OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY SPECTRUM IS GIVEN IN THIS PAPER. REMOTE SENSING INSTRUMENTS HAVING DEMONSTRATED AND/OR POTENTIAL USE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS ARE DESCRIBED. USE OF PHOTOGRAPHY, THERMAL IMAGERY, MULTISPECTRAL IMAGERY, AND SIDE-LOOKING AIRBORNE RADAR IS EMPHASIZED. /AUTHOR/
