Biofuels research gap analysis

This study sought to examine where gaps in the knowledge regarding the impacts of biofuels existed and identify issues that needed to be addressed in order for the government to develop policies to move the UK towards sustainable fuel production. In the course of the assessment the observations were made that work would need to be conducted on an international basis, that sustainability issues could not be seen in isolation and that 'road maps' were required. The results of the gap analysis are grouped into four key findings each relating to a major topic area for research: i) a need to understand the indirect impacts of biofuels, particularly indirect land use change, ii) a need to improve knowledge of the environmental, socio-economic and supply impacts of biofuels, iii) a need for research to examine the evolution of the production, infrastructure and vehicle technologies necessary to enable longer term biofuel targets for transport to be met and for improving the sustainability of biofuels and iv) a number of cross-cutting research gaps need to be addressed.
