Future Mobility in Mississippi: Meeting the State’s Need for Safe and Efficient Mobility

This report investigates current bridge and highway conditions, level of traffic safety, amount of traffic congestion and the financial needs of major bridges, highways and roads in Mississippi. It finds that highway reconstruction, maintenance and rehabilitation needs are growing, and the the current funding is not sufficient for those needs. Mississippi ranks 8th in the nation on structurally deficient bridges. Levels of traffic congestion are increasing. Even though Mississippi sustained a significant drop in traffic fatalities during the period 2005-2008, it still has the 6th highest traffic fatality rate in the U.S. It is clear that more federal funding is needed in order to meet Mississippi's need for efficient and safe mobility.
