Develop Preparedness by Building Bridges

Industry focused coordination and outreach in United States Coast Guard (USCG) marine industry training (IT) is profiled. Four types of IT programs, which are similar to internships, exist: investigations industry training; port safety/security industry training; marine environmental protection industry training; and merchant marine industry training. Each has a unique focus. IT program applicants are, ideally, lieutenants and lieutenant commanders with at least four years of prevention or response field experience and authorization to wear the marine safety insignia. The author describes personal experience in the marine environmental protection IT program. Interorganizational interaction and the building of effective professional relationships are among the professional development benefits highlighted.
