The role of exercises in United States Coast Guard (USCG) emergency preparedness is examined in this article. The goal of an exercise is to attempt to find out how emergency response can be made better and more efficient. If lessons learned and best practices identified during exercises are acted on, preparedness can be improved. Barriers to improvement include planning exercises that may be made too easy in order to avoid failure, or not highlighting a problem because it has been highlighted before. Development and implementation of an effective after action plan is critical. An insert details online databases maintained by organizations such as the USCG, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Defense.
