Cracking Sensitivity of Normal- and High-Strength Concretes

This study investigated how technological parameters influence concrete cracking performance with regard to mixture design, curing, and admixture use in high-strength concrete (HSC) and normal-strength concrete (NSC). The authors conclude that in NSC, shrinkage and cracking sensitivity are largely independent of the water-cement ratio (w/c) and cement content. Yet, because lower w/c concrete strength is higher, cracking sensitivity is not different than that of a higher w/c concrete, despite internal shrinkage-induced stresses. While HSC is much more sensitive to cracking than NSC is, this sensitivity can be mitigated by either incorporating shrinkage-reducing admixtures or using sealed curing. Combining the two in concrete results in very little internal stress buildup upon drying. The integrated cracking sensitivity criterion, based on combining the criteria of cracking and stress rates to time, was shown to be more reliable in classification than the individual ones.
