Leafy-Gray Approach

In downtown Minneapolis, Marquette Avenue South and 2nd Avenue South are parallel arteries serving as its chief express bus streets. The MARQ2 transit project, which has a federally mandated deadline of December 31, 2009, involves nearly complete reconstruction of these streets between 1st and 12th Street South. MARQ2 is a multifaceted project which includes environmentally friendly concrete and almost 200 new trees as part of a dramatic new streetscape design. This should provide a more sustainable and pedestrian-friendly environment that commuters, residents, visitors, and businesses can enjoy. MARQ2 has been a crossroads of cooperation between city engineers, contractors, subcontractors, private utility companies, city residents, businesses, commuters, and pedestrians. It is only a part of a comprehensive transportation and transit strategy designed to deal with the more than 150,000 commuters who enter and exit downtown Minneapolis each day. The project, from design to bidding to innovative sustainability, is reviewed by the author.
