Built for Capacity

GE Transportation's Evolution brand represents a concept rather than a specific locomotive design. One locomotive in the Evolution line is the PowerHaul. In November 2007, the United Kingdom's (UK's) Freightliner Ltd. awarded GE Transportation a contract for up to 30 PowerHaul locomotives, which will be designated Class 70 and represent the UK's first wholly new heavy freight locomotive since the Class 66 to obtain maximum infrastructure capacity. The design of the PowerHaul used in the UK is somewhat different than that being marketed on the European mainland, which will have a full width body and take advantage of larger loading gauges to give a less cramped layout. GE Transportation technology, servicing, and possible future diesel operations are discussed. An insert provides additional detail on the Freightliner Group.
