Bridging the Gap

The "Climate Express" was a German Rail charter train that traveled from Brussels, Belgium, to Copenhagen, Denmark on December 5, 2009. The train's more than 300 'eco-passengers' were part of a ceremonial journey organized by the International Union of Railways for delegates traveling to the COP15 summit. The train itself used double-headed electric traction with power supplied from renewable sources. In addition to the environmental friendliness of the vehicle, rail's efforts to partner with other transportation sectors to deliver modal shift was emphasized on the journey. Rail industry emphasis on sustainability was also discussed.
