Tool for Energy Storage System Synthesis

The energy storage system (ESS) is an essential part of electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles. Tool for Energy Storage System Synthesis (TESSS), which automatically transforms ESS demands to cost-effective ESS design candidates, is described in this paper. Characteristic of TESSS is that: optimization and mathematical modeling are essential; batteries of various types, supercapacitors, and combined ESSs are handled ESS technologies, with both battery and supercapacitor cells included in combined ESSs; cost function and requirements are pointed out by optimal design (cost function includes costs due to energy losses, wear cost, and investment cost, while requirement examples are minimal power, maximum package volume, and voltage); and user friendliness and extreme computational efficiency due to its compiled C code. Two case studies are presented to exemplify the practical use of TESSS.
