The Continuing Rise of Continuous Descents

An aircraft operating technique, the continuous descent approach (CDA) reduces the amount of level flight in an arriving aircraft's descent. This reduces both fuel burn and noise. CDA use is on the rise. The European Joint Industry Action Plan for CDAs was launched in March 2009. One of the plan's key aims is working collaboratively to raise awareness of CDAs and their potential business and environmental benefits, as well as provide active support to stakeholders. There has been non-stop implementation progress since the March launch, according to EUROCONTROL's CDA Implementation Support Team. Cooperation between all airport operational stakeholders is mandatory, since CDAs cannot be implemented by a single stakeholder acting alone.
